About Guru

Dr. Smt. Raksha Karthik

Dr. Smt. Raksha Karthik, is a Bharatanatyam Guru / Artist and choreographer from Bangalore, India. She is accredited by the International Dance Council– CID, and is recognised by UNESCO. She also is a member of the American Dance Therapy Association An exponent of Vazhuvoor style of Bharatnatyam started learning the art of dancing at the age of seven. She has been trained in the advance forms of Abhinaya or the expressional techniques in Indian dance by Guru B. Bhanumathi and Guru Sheela Chandrashekhar at Nritya Kalamandiram. 

A dental surgeon by profession and artist by heart, she is truly living her passion and has to her credit many solo dance performances & group performances. She is a graded artist in Doordarshan. 

Raksha also performs contemporary dance sequences on various themes. Having won several awards and accolades for Indian dance in India and abroad, Raksha is known for her unique teaching techniques in classical and folk forms of dance. She runs School of dance in Bangalore, imparting her knowledge and performs with her disciples regularly. 

She also teaches Bharathanatyam to the visually and audio/speech impaired from the last 15 years. Being one of the teachers of Bharatanatyam to the visually impaired and audio/speech impaired, she believes that art is universal.Dancing has been very special to her throughout her career.

She has been awarded a Honorary Doctorate from Universal Development Council & Excellence in Dance Award, and honoured at Sri Jaydev Samaroh, Orissa with  Padmavati Pratibha Puraskar, with the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Memorial ‘Yuva Kala Guru Satkar’ State Award, Natya Kalaapraveene Award by Kalaayana School, as Kalaa Prapoorna by Shivapriya School of Dance, as Kala Mani at Hosur Natyanjali the ‘Acharya Devo Bhava’ Plaque of honor for Vocational Service by Rotary Bangalore South West & ‘Karunaada Lalitakalaa Thilaka’ for her contributions in the field of Bharathanatyam.

For her it is an expression of one’s inner self, a state of bliss for the mind and body, synchronization of bhava, raga and tala. She is married Karthik Kittu, who also shares her passion & is a Innovation Catalyst & Social Entrepreneur
